About Our Center:
Northwest Kidney Centers (NKC) is a not-for-profit kidney health organization established in 1962 as the world's first outpatient dialysis facility. NKC currently serves 1,200 people with kidney failure through 12 convenient dialysis facilities and a premier home dialysis program.
Northwest Kidney Centers home dialysis program is based at the organization's Haviland Kidney Center in Seattle. Dialysis pioneer Dr. Belding Scribner first established NKC's home hemodialysis program in 1967. In 1970, NKC began offering peritoneal dialysis.
Over the years, Northwest Kidney Centers has expanded its home dialysis program to offer patients a full range of treatment options, including nocturnal and daily dialysis. NKC has also been involved in many home dialysis innovations and studies in the past 35 years. In 2000, NKC served as the lead site for clinical trials on the Aksys PHD machine, and today many NKC patients are choosing daily dialysis on this machine. Home hemodialysis patients can also choose to receive treatment on the B. Braun machine. For peritoneal dialysis patients, NKC offers the Baxter Home Choice cycler for APD, and the Baxter ultra bags for CAPD. All equipment is maintained in excellent condition by NKC's experienced technical services staff, or by the manufacturers.
Home patients and their loved ones can contact NKC's home dialysis program at any time. A nurse is available 24 hours each day to assist with questions or concerns. Home hemodialysis patients are seen by NKC home dialysis staff in the clinic quarterly, and in their homes annually. Peritoneal dialysis patients make visits to the peritoneal dialysis clinic monthly. Northwest Kidney Centers' dietitians and social workers provide ongoing support to home patients through regular telephone calls and face-to-face meetings.
Northwest Kidney Centers is proud to be a leader in home dialysis care since 1967. The organization's mission is to promote the optimal health, quality of life and independence of people with kidney disease, through patient care, education, and research.
